The name Philodendron, derives from the Greek "Philo", love, and from "dendron", tree.
It is a genus composed of 275 species, formed by varieties of evergreen and climbing shrubs. The plant is native to South America, and is easy to grow both in greenhouses and in apartments. Creepers need a guardian, preferably musk. The leaves are very ornamental and in many species the youngest are very different from the adult ones.
The philodendron rarely flowers.
Filodendri melanocrysum can be grown in pots of 15-30 cm (depending on the size of the plant), using a peat-based compost. The plant needs a lot of light, but must stay away from direct sunlight. In winter the ideal temperature is about 15 degrees, but the philodendron is also resistant to 5 ° C.
We recommend abundantly watering the philodendron melanocrysum from April to October and moderating the rest of the year. However, never let the compost dry, making sure not to rot the roots (in the apartment it is advisable to place the pots in trays filled with gravel, which must always be moist). In the apartment it is necessary to repot every two years, and in the years in which this operation is not carried out, it is advisable to administer a liquid fertilizer from 15 May to September.
In the period of May or June, take from the climbing plants of philodendron melanocrysum apical cuttings, of a length of 10-15 cm, and plant them individually in a humid environment at a temperature of about 20 ° C.
Alternatively, in May, portions of stems formed from 1, 2, or 3 knots can be taken to be rooted like the apical cuttings.
Non-climbing species, on the other hand, multiply by seed or by division of the tufts. Sowing takes place in April, at a temperature of about 25 ° C; Then the seedlings are placed in trays and then transplanted into pots of about 8 cm, using a peat-based compost.
To make the division instead, in the period of May or June, the apex of the plant is removed. After a year, once the side shoots have developed, the stem is cut into many portions, each one with a bud. They are then planted in the compound already described and are kept at a temperature of about 25 ° C until the plants have taken root well.
Originally from Colombia, it reaches a height of two meters. It is a climbing plant that is characterized by its sloping leaves, dark green, with ivory-colored veins, and up to 60 cm long.
Native to Brazil, it is a non-climbing species up to a meter high. It has deep green and deeply incised leaves, which are formed by a very short stem and are carried by long petioles. The adult leaves are formed after about two years and are about 60 cm long and 45 cm wide.
Philodendron - Philodendron melanocrysum: Philodendron erubescens Red Emerald
Native to Colombia, it is a vigorous climbing plant, with aerial roots at each node. It has shiny pink leaves as soon as they are formed, then dark green and about 25 cm long. The stems and petioles are purple.
