It is a genus that includes some species of small evergreen shrubs, semirampicanti, originating in central and southern America. The stiff semi-woody stems, which grow up to 150-200 cm, carry large heart-shaped, pointed, glossy and waxy leaves; the leaves of syngonium podophyllum are light green, mottled or variegated with white, yellow, dark green; there are numerous hybrids, also with pink or orange leaves. Generally Singonio plants grown in a container do not produce flowers. Very used as houseplants, i Syngonium podophyllum are often grown in hanging baskets or by twisting the longer stems on special stakes, so as to leave the plants the right space to develop at their best.

The specimens of Singonio are cultivated in a very bright position, but sheltered from the direct rays of the sun; in spring and summer it is possible to place the plants outdoors, in a shady place, during the cold months they can shelter, however, in the house, since they prefer minimum temperatures above 10-15 ° C. The ideal temperature for Singonio cultivation is around 20 ° C. It is a plant that likes a good air exchange but does not tolerate cold drafts, so it must be placed in a sheltered place.

As for the water supply, it is essential to water regularly, avoiding water stagnations that are harmful, but keeping the soil constantly moist. During the winter the watering must be reduced, but taking care to check that the soil does not dry out too much. When the temperatures are very high it is good to intervene by spraying water at room temperature on the foliage.
From March to October, mix the fertilizer for green plants with the water for watering, every 15-20 days. The Syngonium podophyllum do not tolerate drought, some varieties are in fact used as vegetation for aquariums.

To place the Singonio specimens in their homes, use a soft, light and balanced soil, which may be able to slightly retain moisture. These plants develop quite quickly, so it is advisable to repot them also annually if you notice that the vase is small for the size of the root system. Repotting should be performed at the beginning of spring.

The reproduction of specimens of this genus takes place by stem cuttings, preferably in spring. It often happens that the stems spontaneously root touching the ground, or that they produce aerial roots. The cuttings should be placed in a mixture of peat and sand and kept in a sheltered place with a temperature of around 20 ° C until they take root.

Singonio - Syngonium podophyllum: Pests and diseases

This plant fears root rot and cochineal; the presence of this parasite is immediately evident because those that look like cotton flakes are formed on the leaf surface. It is possible to eliminate them manually with a cloth and alcohol if they are limited, otherwise it is advisable to use a special insecticide product.
In some cases it can also be affected by aphids which can be eliminated by increasing the amount of moisture, a factor that allows the removal of parasites.
