Features of growing lemon indoors

In indoor conditions, when growing lemon, several conditions must be observed.
Lighting should be diffused. All citrus fruits do not like changes in lighting. It is impossible to sharply turn or transfer the plant from one place to another.

Flowers and ovary begin to fall off as soon as the lighting changes. In the winter season, the tree can be illuminated. When kept in a room with a temperature of +7 to + 14 degrees, the backlight can be turned off, because citrus fruits "fall asleep" at this temperature, do not grow and do not need additional lighting.

The temperature in the room where the lemon grows should be constant. The plant does not like sudden changes. When ventilating the room in winter, you need to be especially careful. Cold air from the vents negatively affects the plant, and it can shed all the leaves.

To humidify the air in winter, next to the plant, you need to install dishes with a wide mouth filled with water.

This will keep the foliage from drying out the edges. But watering should be discussed in more detail.

How to water lemon properly

It is a moisture-loving plant and requires regular watering in spring and summer. In winter, watering is reduced. If the soil in the pot dries out a lot, the leaves will turn yellow and fall off.

It is also not necessary to overmoisten the soil. From this, the soil sour, the roots rot. And the plant will simply die. Good drainage will help prevent this. It is best to use a long-nosed watering can for watering. You need to pour it slowly and until water appears in the pan, which must be drained after half an hour.

It is very important to find the line between waterlogging and drying out and always stick to it. The soil in a container with lemon should not turn into a swamp, but it is best for it to be moderately moist. It is impossible to indicate how much water your lemon needs. It depends on the size of the pet and the container in which it grows.

What water should be used for irrigation

The best water for watering a lemon is rain, river, or snow. Usually it is watered with tap water. And it is dangerous for citrus fruits. It contains chlorine or other disinfectants that can harm the plant.

Tap water can be improved and made suitable for watering indoor plants:

  • melt snow, warm water;
  • leave a container with a wide mouth with water in the sun for 24 hours;
  • let the boiled water cool and settle;
  • add 0.5 g of citric acid or 4-5 drops of acetic acid per 1 liter to the raw, settled water from the tap. Instead of citric acid, you can take the same amount of drops of nitric acid;
  • insist a day 200 g of peat in three liters of ordinary water

Watering the lemon in winter is necessary as the soil in the pot dries up and water is 2-3 degrees warmer than the temperature in the room where it grows.

How many times a week do you need to water the lemon

It is very important not to allow excessive watering and drying out of the earthen coma. With excessive watering, the soil loses the nutrients necessary for the plant. Its roots can rot.

Poor watering can cause the plant to dry out. To determine if the soil needs to be moistened, take some soil from the pot and squeeze it with your fingers. When the earth sticks together into a lump, there is enough moisture and there is no need to water it yet, and if the lump crumbles, water the lemon tree.

A similar test for determining soil moisture should be done at least once every 7 days, and more often in summer.

Recommended volumes of water

Watering is done abundantly and slowly, allowing moisture to be absorbed into the soil and not drain. When watering quickly, water will simply flow out through the holes in the container and will not be absorbed into the soil.

The amount of water depends on the volume of the pot, the larger it is, the more liquid you need. Only personal experience and a burning desire to eat your own lemons will help you determine the watering rate for your particular plant.

Watering plants in summer, subject to outdoor placement

Lemons growing in the room for the summer can be taken out to the balcony or garden. They must be placed in a shaded area so as not to expose foliage to sunburn in direct sunlight.

Lemon trees are easily transferred to the street, but returning to the room leads to the fact that, due to the reduction in lighting, the plants shed their foliage.

To reduce the evaporation of moisture from a container with lemon taken out into the air, you can do the following:

  • use a glass pot, and put an earthen one in a large container;
  • cover the soil surface with mulch, which will slow down evaporation;
  • arrange drip irrigation

Do not forget that outside the tree should be watered early in the morning or late in the evening, when the heat and sun cannot accelerate evaporation.

It should be remembered that moisture on the leaves causes burns when exposed to sunlight.

On hot summer days, indoor lemon, standing outside at temperatures above +29 degrees, needs to be watered every day, and sometimes twice. It depends on the rate of drying of the soil in the pot. When the topsoil dries to a depth of 2-3 cm, the plant needs watering.

If suddenly, through an oversight, it turned out that the soil in a pot with a lemon tree dried up and it began to shed its leaves - do not rush to put an end to your pet! Apply submerged watering.

The method consists in placing the plant pot in a large container filled with water.

The water level should be a few centimeters below ground level in the lemon pot. You can remove the pot from the container with water after the earthen clod has soaked. You can test this with a bamboo skewer. If it passes freely to the very bottom, it's time to take out the pot.

Perhaps after this the tree will not only come to life, but also bloom profusely. Some citrus growers deliberately overdry the soil in a lemon pot, bringing it to the point of shedding the leaves in order to stimulate flowering.

How often to spray lemon

For these plants, the humidity of the air in the room is important, because their usual habitat is subtropics. Homemade lemons should be sprinkled daily with soft water. At the same time, not only the leaves of the plant are moistened, but also the air around it.

Spraying saturates the air with moisture and at the same time cleans the foliage and stem from dust. Continuous spraying promotes the growth and development of indoor lemon and fights dry air-loving spider mites.

How to water a lemon during flowering

Waiting for the lemon to bloom is already an achievement. A pleasant aroma spreads around the house and I hope that the fruits will appear soon. During this period, you need to be especially attentive to your pet.

A flowering tree cannot be transferred or rearranged to another place, because all flowers and fruits will fall off.

Watering should be done in the same mode, not allowing anyone to dry out, and avoiding overflow, use fertilizers dissolved in water.
