Shrub characteristic

Forsythia is one of the first to bloom in the garden. Flowering begins in March or April. It depends on the variety and region. The shrub has spreading branches. In height, it can reach three to four meters. Forsythia bushes are very effectively blown away as a hedge.

There are six varieties of forsythia, the most popular are:

  • European forsythia blooms with bright yellow bells
  • Giralda has light yellow twisted flowers
  • Hanging forsythia has sprawling, lush branches that hang almost to the ground.
  • Ovate has bright flowers and leaves
  • The greenest has flowers of a greenish tint
  • Snow forsythia is distinguished by white flowers, the middle is yellow

Forsythia average is a hybrid that combines the greenest and hanging varieties. Her flowers are bright yellow, tripartite. All types of shrubs can withstand frosts of at least 10 degrees. Harsh cold winters can kill the plant. Hanging forsythia is the most sensitive to winter frost.

Therefore, it is grown only in the southern regions. But the European, on the contrary, is more resistant to cold weather. Forsythia average refers to winter-hardy varieties and is suitable for growing in the northern and central zones of the Non-Black Earth Region. In order for forsythia to please with its flowering every spring, it is necessary to correctly approach the choice of a variety.

Planting a plant

Shrubs are planted in spring or autumn. An autumn transplant is best done long before the onset of frost. The plant should have time to take root in the new territory before winter comes. In addition, the autumn planting requires mandatory mulching. For the winter, a young tree is insulated with a covering material. Medium forsythia is not demanding on the ground.

And yet, alkaline soil is more suitable for its normal growth. Acidic soil will not work for this plant; wood ash will have to be added to it. For planting, a slightly shaded, wind-protected place is chosen.

Landing holes are dug with dimensions of 50x50x60. Drainage is poured to the bottom, which can be made from broken bricks or use rubble. The drainage layer is 15 cm, then a layer of sand is poured. The plant is buried 40 cm from the surface of the earth. If you plan to plant several bushes, a distance of 1.5 meters is maintained between them.

After the seedlings are lowered into the holes, they are covered with earth, and the area around is tamped tightly. Now the plant needs to be watered abundantly.

Medium forsythia care

The plant needs fertilization. The first time it is fed before flowering. To do this, you can use complex mineral fertilizers. One square meter will require 60 grams of funds. At the end of flowering, one more top dressing is done. This time, they introduce universal kemira. Calculate 100 grams of fertilizer per square meter.

Forsythia does not need to be watered abundantly, provided that the precipitation falls within the normal range. But the plant also tolerates drought very well. Excessive moisture will cause more damage to the shrub than overdried soil.

Pruning branches

Pruning the bushes for the first two to three years will not be required. Only those branches that are frozen are subject to removal. Mature plants are pruned during the summer. The pruning procedure is as follows:

  • first, the ends of the branches frozen over the winter are removed
  • after the flowering period, the faded branches are shortened by half
  • old and dead branches are cut at the root at a height of 6 cm from the ground, new shoots are formed in their place

With the help of pruning, you can give the bushes different shapes:

  • cupped
  • spherical

Once every four years, the plant is rejuvenated. For this, the branches are cut by 2/3. This procedure promotes the growth of new shoots. This is done in order to get more luxuriant shrubs.

Fight disease

Forsythia medium is resistant to pests and diseases. But it will have to be protected from some diseases. The plant can be affected by such ailments:

  • monoliosis, it is characterized by the appearance of brown spots on the leaves, diseased leaves and shoots are removed and burned, a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid is used for prophylactic purposes
  • bacteriosis is an infectious disease that cannot be eliminated, the only thing that remains is to dig up the plant and burn it so that other plants in the garden do not suffer
  • wilting leads to damage to branches and foliage, as a treatment, spraying with foundationol is performed, prevention is carried out with a vector preparation (2 ml per 10 liters of water

The pest that affects the shrub is nematodes. The parasite infects the roots of the plant, which eventually leads to the death of the plant. To get rid of parasites, the land around the shrub is cultivated with carbation. If you plant calendula or marigolds next to forsythia, you can forget about pests, since these plants cannot tolerate parasites.

Medium forsythia is a uniquely beautiful plant that gives the garden a flowering chic look. In order for a plant to delight with its flowers for more than one year, you need to properly care for it.
