Red pineapple
The red pineapple is a variegated bromeliad of the earthly species and has a limited life (its life cycle is in fact only 3 years). It is an indoor plant of great effect in shape and colors and stands out well in mixed compositions with cacti, other ideal varieties used to decorate and embellish the apartment. Red pineapple is also known as Ananas bracteatus striatus. The development of the plant is rather small and bushy. It has pointed leaves and spiny margins. In the summer period it is possible to see inflorescences with violet shades that subsequently will form fleshy and succulent fruits of red color. The plant, after producing the fruit, dies. To allow the plant to grow back, it is necessary to plant the basal jets which the fruit produces once it has appeared.

Crop requirements

The leaves are green, narrow and compact, with yellow spiny margins and sharp points. For optimal growth the plant should be placed in a sunny place with plenty of light. If the lighting is insufficient the leaves lose their variegation, although the plant survives even in dim light. In the latter case, periodically turn the plant so that the growth is uniform. Spray well during the growing season; let the soil dry between one wetting and another. In winter, wash sparingly. Red pineapple needs a minimum temperature of 15 ° to grow well. Temperatures up to 21 ° are required to accelerate growth. The ideal soil for pineapple bracteatus striatus is formed from fat earth; bromeliads of terrestrial species require a growth medium different from that of the species growing on trees (epiphytes). Fertilize weekly in summer, using a potassium-rich fertilizer that will help keep leaf colors alive.
Playback

After fruiting, the mother plant dies. At its base, then, jets are formed, suitable to be potted as soon as the mother plant is withered. Repot when they are about halfway through growth.
