this genus includes about three hundred species of succulent plants, originating in southern Africa; there are species that can reach large sizes, as species of very small size. The forms may be the most diverse; for example C. ovata is a small tree, with a roundish crown, in a container it can grow up to 70-80 cm, with fleshy stem and small oval leaves. In late autumn many species produce small clusters of white or yellowish flowers; there are also cultivars and hybrids, with extravagant shapes or particular colors.

it adapts to living in the greenhouse and in the apartment, but in the most hot areas it can also be grown outside, in a very bright and sunny place. The soil, in the latter case, must be loose and well drained, composed of 2/3 of soil and 1/3 of sand or gravel. If grown in pots, it is good to remember that the size of this must be commensurate with the size of the plant. Repotting is necessary every two years. The crassulae with branched growth sometimes require pruning, to keep the foliage more compact and to prevent the heavy leaves from causing the arching of the branches. Every 30-35 days it is advisable to provide the plants with a specific fertilizer for succulent plants, mixed with the water of the waterings, which must be fairly abundant from March to October, less frequent during the cold months, always waiting for the soil to be perfectly dry between one watering and the other.

The multiplication can take place by cuttings of leaves (period: spring or summer) or by means of stem cuttings (whose length must be between 5/8 cm; period: May-July), if it is a species with particularly developed stem, as in the case of the crassula arborescens.

Parasites and Diseases

the most widespread disease, above all for the stony species, is the gray mold, which can appear due to poor drainage or too abundant watering and which appears as a yellowish patina on the leaves. An excess of water can also cause root rot, following which the tips dry and the plant dies. They are often affected by cochineal and mites.

This species is of medium size; in fact, the height can be a maximum of about 60/65 cm. Flowering also occurs in winter and the flowers are white and star-shaped. The leaves, grouped two by two at the base, are roundish and fleshy, dark green in color, although on the margins it is possible to distinguish lighter shades.
